Located in the Lerma valley in North West Argentina, the small town of Salta is a bit of a hidden treasure. Set against your typically mountainous Argentinian backdrop, Salta enjoys stunning views, great activities and an interesting cultural, historical and architectural background. Many of the buildings here are incredibly ornate - some of them look almost gilded. There are a fine number of colonial mansion and churches to explore, amongst other thing. Once you've booked your flight to Salta and booked in at a Salta hotel, you might try exploring the city center. The center is relatively small and can be easily explored on foot. At Plaza 9 de Julio, the center of town, you will find a Cathedral built in the 1800s and the Cabildo. To the east of the town center there is a cable car which departs from Parque San Martin and takes you to Cerro San Barnado. The ride is great and you will be able to enjoy a great view from the top of this tourist attraction. Once you've explored the city at your own leisurely pace, we suggest you go back to your hotel and rest up a bit - there will be a lot more to do tomorrow!

Not far from Salta is the small suburb of San Lorenzo. If you're still suffering from Jet lag or just trying to take it easy, it's a great place to relax. Here you will be able to take a troll in the part or enjoy one of the many hiking trails that takes you into the forest. If you have a bit more energy, you can arrange to go on an enjoyable horseback ride up the hill where you will be able to enjoy a great view of Salta. Another option is to simply stroll around the neighborhood and take in the beautiful colonial-styled architecture. Before you finish you day, make sure you head down to Plaza 9 de Julio to make more travel arrangements. Another great feature is the Tren A Las Nubes (train to the clouds). The 15 hour train ride takes you to an altitude of 4200 m where you will find the large viaduct La Polvorilla. You will also see the small Indian village of San Antion de Los Cobres. On the train you will be offered hand-made alpaca sweaters made by local craftsman while folk bands play traditional music.
