Explore the vibrant city center of Knokke
Knokke is a place of beautiful beaches, towering sand dunes and great fishing opportunities. It is a place where people go to get away from the stresses of life and it boasts an economy and culture well catered to this. Knokke is a small town situated in Knokke-Heist in Belgium. The place is famous for it's stunning beaches and for the dike system to which it owes it origins. Today it is probably one of the most elegant seaside resorts in the country.
Knokke started life as a simple vacation haven for the humble people of Brussels. Every year families would journey here to enjoy the cool blue water and the pristine sand dunes. However, over time the location's potential was realized and it gradually started to cater for more upscale clientele. In 1880 the small fishing village had grown to such an extent that it merged with the Het Zoute residential suburb and again later with Alberstrand. By the thirties it was one of Europes leading seaside resorts. In more recent years the coastal towns of Heist and Duinbergen have also been absorbed into the ever growing developed areas of Knokke. Today there are not only many great hotels, resorts and campsites but a number of restaurants which offer fine food and shops where you can spend cloudy days browsing and buying to your hearts content.
Besides being able to enjoy the many conveniences of Knokke you will find that there are a few good attractions in or near the town such as the Sincfala Folklore Museum, the Butterfly Park, the numerous great beaches and the Het Zwin Nature Reserve. The Nature Reserve is not too far away and makes for a great day trip. There are also a few fairs and festivals which are mainly held at the Scharpoord cultural center, such as the World Cartoon Exhibition, the Knokke European Song Contest and the annual Folk Festival. If you're planning some holiday time in Belgium, why not try the beautiful beaches of Knokke? It's a holiday makers delight!
