Explore the pretty town of Nieuwpoort
The pretty town of Nieuwpoort, Belgium, enjoys a large amount of tourism with its extensive yacht harbor. The harbor is one of the largest in the North Sea and is capable of having 2600 moorings should that be necessary. Nieuwpoort is situated on the IJzer river just 3km from where it flows into the North Sea so the town and port is well sheltered but provides great access to the sea.
As you can imagine, the inhabitants of Nieuwpoort have long made use of the river as a source of food and industry - so you can expect to find great sea-food as well as brilliant yachting conditions. Nieuwpoort can be easily divided into two sections - that of Nieuwpoort Bad and Nieuwpoort Stad which is situated a little further inland. Nieuwpoort Stad is where all the fishing takes place and is also the home of the majority of the town's industries. Nieuwpoort Bad is the best place to head if you are a tourist as it is where all the yachting takes place.
Nieuwpoort is surprisingly diverse and you can enjoy a number of different activities here. The IJzermonding Nature Reserve is a great place to watch water birds in their natural habitat. Of course there are numerous water activities such as Fishing, yachting and boat excursions to be enjoyed and you might also enjoy looking at the IJzer Sluices. You might also try a sea excursion. The Onze Lieve Vroukerk, which was destroyed in the war, was rebuilt in the original Gothic style and so is still worth a visit while the Koning Albert Monument is an impressive equestrian statue erected in honor of King Albert I. The top of the monument offers a good view of the town and its surroundings. Not far away towards Ostend you will find the Middelkerke resort which offers water sports, walking, riding and cycling while the Grote Markt is a great place to do some shopping. Why not your stay at a hotel in Nieuwpoort to make sure that you enjoy this pretty little part of Belgium too? Its a great place to spend a vacation.
