Miami International Film Festival
The Miami International Film Festival will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary with the 2008 event which is to take place from 28 February to 9 March 2008 in Miami, Florida, U.S.A. This highly successful film festival never loses sight of its mission to promote cultural understanding and tolerance, while encouraging artistic expression and excellence through the medium of thought-provoking film.
The annual festival offers international filmmakers and industry professionals the opportunity to showcase their films in a setting that allows maximum exposure to the United States, considered to be the world’s largest film market, as well as internationally. The festival is supported by the Miami Dade College, an internationally respected institution of higher learning. Additionally, the Miami International Film Festival’s film and events programs have the support of the Miami Film Society, which has assisted the festival in establishing a deep connection with the multicultural communities of Miami.
Events such as the Miami International Film Festival are seen to make a significant contribution to uniting communities while encouraging each community to maintain their unique cultures. A feature of the festival is Encuentros – a ground-breaking program which offers producers from Latin America and Spain an opportunity to interact with United States and International film industry professionals. Their films are shown to audiences which include producers, television station representatives, sales agents and film distributors, opening up a myriad of opportunities for these producers to achieve their ultimate goal of reaching the public with their films.
In addition to the prestige attached to winning an award at the Miami International Film Festival, winners receive generous cash prizes. The Knight Foundation aims to promote worldwide journalism excellence and to this end they offer their ongoing support to the Miami International Film Festival through sponsoring The Knight Grand Jury prizes. A cash award of $25,000 goes to the winner in each of three categories, namely World Dramatic Features, Documentary Features and Ibero Dramatic Features. For the first time, $2,500 in prize money will be awarded to the winner of the Short Film competition at the 2008 event.
The 2007 Miami International Film Festival saw more than 300 filmmakers, directors, producers, actors, writers and other film industry representatives from around the world attending screenings, conducting business and enjoying educational and social functions. While the more than 70,000 visitors that flocked to view the 120 films from different parts of the world gained a deeper appreciation of the film industry and the influential power that films have on human emotions. Organizers and participants have every reason to believe that the 2008 Miami International Film Festival will be better than ever before.
