Puerto Rico Cultural Parade in Tampa, Florida

Tampa lies on the west coast of Florida, in the United States. A popular tourist destination, it has a magnificent heritage, and overflows with historical buildings and monuments. Through the years, Tampa’s population has continued to grow as people moved to this picturesque city and its increasing markets. Respecting cultures and traditions is a moral standard that is woven into the fabric of the city, and it is evident that great support is given to any cultural event or festival. The most popular cultural attraction and festival is the Puerto Rico Cultural Parade, which draws approximately 60 000 spectators and participants every year.

If traveling through Florida during April this year, tourists should ensure that they are in Tampa on the 26th of April 2008 to join in the fun and celebrations of the Puerto Rico Cultural Parade. This was the first Puerto Rican parade to be held in Florida, and was founded by Gloria E. Rivera in 1988. The parade is a celebration of traditions, culture and folklore that is still practiced in Puerto Rico and is not only an educational tool for Puerto Ricans born in the United States and the rest of the community, but it is a reminder of their heritage and roots. Tourism to Florida and to Puerto Rico is increased as the parade gives visitors a small taste of the richness and beauty that can be found on the island. It is also a day for the Puerto Rican community to demonstrate and share their pride and culture with the world.

Spectators line the streets to watch the colorful parade dance through the streets of Tampa. Large, colorful floats set the background to the parade, whilst dancers, musicians, marching bands, drum majorettes and other elaborately dressed parade participants fill the parade with music, entertainment and energy. The parade ends at the Curtis Hixson Park, where more surprises and fun await spectators.

A large stage at the one end of the park is the centre for live entertainment and music, featuring performers, bands and musicians from Puerto Rico and from various states around the country who attend the festival to promote their music and add rhythm to the celebrations. Storytellers will keep the young spellbound with their folklores and legends, while the many different food vendors ensure that their traditional Puerto Rican meals satisfy the hungry. Rides for children, arts and crafts, souvenirs, art and activities fill the program right into the night. To experience the cultures, traditions and festive energy of the island of Puerto Rico, in Florida, the Puerto Rico Cultural Parade is the perfect attraction and festival.
