The Peak on Hong Kong Island
During the nineteenth century, The Peak, which stands at 552 meters, was used as a signaling post for ships, as it is the highest mountain on Hong Kong Island. But the lure of view looking out over the city was too great a temptation for the privileged amongst the community, such as Governor Sir Richard MacDonnell who constructed his summer home here in 1868. The Peak Hotel was constructed in 1873, but burnt down in 1938. As the land became an exclusive residential area, and to enable easier access to The Peak, the first tram to The Peak was opened on 30 May 1888.
Today The Peak is a breathtaking attraction in Hong Kong, and the faithful tram is still in operation to take visitors to their destination. The adventure begins at the terminus of the tram, as The Peak Tram Historical Gallery is located here. The tunnel, filled with displays and over two hundred items of memorabilia, was opened in 2007. It takes visitors on a journey from the nineteenth and into the twenty-first century.
After enjoying the spectacular views from the tram, visitors will be met by a modern center that is filled with great dining, stylish shopping experiences and magnificent entertainment. The Peak Tower bursts with attractions and sights, such as the famous Sky Terrace. The Sky Terrace has been constructed at 428 meters above sea level and offers a stunning three hundred and sixty degree view of the city below and the surrounding landscapes. The view can be enjoyed at any time of day or night. The Sky Gallery exhibits seventeen beautiful photos of Hong Kong, displaying how the city has changed over the ages.
The Sky Terrace and Sky West Deck is also a popular location for functions, and the staff are able to offer guests an unforgettable evening as well as brilliant service. The Peak does not only cater to children, tourists and sophisticated visitors, but also has much to offer nature lovers. Magnificent forest and mountain walks are available for visitors to enjoy filled with wonderful wildlife and stunning birds of all sizes and color. A trip to The Peak is an unforgettable attraction that is recommended to all who visit Hong Kong.
