Discovered in 1549 by Cabeza de Vaca, the falls were named "Quedas de Santa Maria" which was later renamed "Quedas do Iguazu", a native Guarani Indian name. Origanally a Paraguayan territory, the north side of the area came under Brazilian rule and the south became Argentinian in 1860.The colony slowly developed and was designated a city in 1914 when it came to be called Foz do Iguassu. In 1939 the state created the Praque do Iguaçu. Finally, in 1945 the city received the name Foz do Iguaçu.
The famous Iguassu Falls which flow into Rio Paraná are located on the border of Brazil and Argentina. Measuring 4km wide these 127 falls gush down some 100m. Forming an awe-inspiring semicircle the falls cascade down with a thunderous roar. There are several viewpoints from which to see these breathtaking waters. A 950 m path has been created around the falls and a footbridge is suspended above the river leading to the largest waterfall, namely Garganta do Diabo. By hiking to the base of the falls you can hop on a small ferry to the beach in the river and have a swim.
The Iguassu Falls are located in the massive Iguaçu National Park and is protected by the IBAMA and UNESCO. Approximately 170 000 hectares of the park is in Brazil and 55 000 hectares in Argentina. About 1100 bird species call the subtropical rain forests home as well as an abundance of other creatures such as deer, capybaras, ocelots etc.
The other great attraction in Foz do Iguaçu is the Itaipu hydro-electric station. Water from the Itaipu Dam powers eighteen turbines. Tours of the hydro-electric station take place daily.
