Discover the sweet little town of Chillan
A mid-sized town which is home to roughly 150 000 Chillan, Chile, is approximately five hours south of Santiago. This sweet little town has a strong sense of history and culture though unfortunately quite a few historical monuments have been destroyed in natural disasters.
One of the cities top attractions is a 30 meter high cross. To the average passerby this monumental religious symbol might appear to be a symbol of piety. However if you look a little closer you will find that it is actually sort of giant gravestone - a tribute to the more than 30 000 people who lost their lives in the most devastating earthquake to rock Chillan. The monument is a sober reminder of the immense power of nature and man's inability to stop or predict its course. Another attraction can be found in a small neighboring city by the name of Chillan Viejo. Here you will find the Bernardo O' Higgins museum which is dedicated to one of the great Chilean heroes. Also to be found here is the Museum of Arturo Prat, a navy hero who died for his country during the Pacific war. It is his face which graces the face of the $10.000 peso bill.
However the majority of people visiting Chillan come here for the great outdoor opportunities that it offers. Activities such as skiing (between June and September), bathing in hot springs and hiking are very popular. Vistors can also shop around or enjoy delightful meals at the many different restaurants. Chillan hotel accommodation is of a reasonable standard with some of the more memorable or picturesque accommodation being offered at nearby farms or ranches.
