Enjoy the incredible scenery of Puerto Varas
The beautiful little town of Puerto Varas, Chile, is situated on the southwest side of Lake Llanquihue. It is only 20 km from Puerto Montt and enjoys not only the beautiful waters of the lake but the incredible scenery that goes with it. Across the lake, one can see the beautiful snowcapped peaks of the Calvuco and Osorno volcanoes stretching up into the clouds. Puerto Varas has many activities on offer which make it an enjoyable holiday destination.
The 19th century German colonization of the area is most evident in the architectural style and layout of the town. Puerto Varas also enjoys a large number of fine gardens which are generally cultivated in the German tradition. Besides enjoying the usually quiet waters of the lake, Puerto Varas also has a number of excellent rivers near by which offer fishing and whitewater rafting opportunities. The city is also located near to a number of beautiful wilderness areas and visitors generally enjoy trips to Alerce Andino National Park, Vincente Perez Rosales National Park Llanquihue Lake, Lago Todos los Santos or Petrohue Fall. A ferry trip to Chiloe Island is another popular attraction offering great sightseeing and birdspotting opportunities along the way. The Island itself is home to a small town called Ancud which has a great fresh seafood market.
While the majority of residents of this charming village are middle or upper-class residents who commute to Puerto Montt or other surrounding towns each day, the city is known for being one of Chile's most charming villages and travel hubs. It's somewhat unique architecture and handsome casino give it a distinct feel while the city also boasts an excellent tourism infrastructure so visitors are well catered for. There are a number of great hotels in Puerto Varas which tend to get very full during the holiday season so make sure you book early if you're planning to visit during this time of the year. Alternatively, you could try the cheap hostels in Puerto Varas which will help make your stay more affordable.
