Getting around with Chile transport
Lan Airlines, Sky Airlines and Aerolíneas del Sur are the main domestic airlines of Chile that connects all the major cities daily. Chile's international airport in Santiago is served daily by several international airlines. Most international flights to Chile arrive at the Santiago International Airport.
Chile has a very good train system. Santiago has a fast, clean and safe Metro service, it has no reason to hide compared to the undergrounds of the world, but so far, there are only three lines; the fourth is being built. Most trains are very comfortable and safe, just beware of pickpockets on metro railways at night.
Chile has a good bus system that can get you to all the major cities and regions. Yellow and white urban buses are everywhere in Santiago, and will take you to your destination at a very high speed.
There are car rental companies in most major cities of Chile, the general rate for medium sized cars are about $30.00 for a day. You will be required to show a valid international or foreign drivers license and you will have to be over 21 years of age, you will also have to have a valid major credit card as a method of security. Chile’s roads are good and very well maintained. The people of Chile drive on the right hand side of the road.
Many taxis are available at all times in all regions of Chile. They are easy to spot as they are all black sedans with yellow tops and all of them have their registration numbers visible and have a taximeter. Taxis are rather cheap in Chile compared to other countries. It costs about $1.00 per kilometer.
It is possible to ride a bike across the country in Chile but most roads are heavy with traffic and leave little room for bikes. On the other hand if you are a mountain biker looking for the ultimate challenge and not afraid of roughing it and organizing things on your own, this country has virtually unlimited possibilities for you. Remember the wet rainy months are from May until the end of August or September in central and southern Chile so if you are on a bike make sure you prepare for the weather conditions.
