Explore the beautiful historic town of Horsens
Horsens, located in Denmark's Green Lagoon, is considered one of country's most beautiful historic towns. Established in the era of Vikings, this city is filled with fascinating things to see and do. Simply amble through Horsens' town, with the cobbles beneath your feet and the 18th century buildings beside you, and you will be transported back in time. In the marketplace you will observe the Town Hall beside the magnificent Vor Freisers Kirker, constructed in the 1100s. Inside this church is a carved pulpit and suspended above the altar is an image of Christ created in 1950.
The Horsens Museum preserves Horsens cultural heritage and takes care of all archaeological activities in the surrounding areas. Constructed in 1915-1930, the museum contains artifacts from the "Corridor Grave" as well as from a settlement in the vicinity of Hedegård. "Flensburgs Enkebolig", is part of the museum. These widows' houses were given to the museum by the mayor in 1786.
At the harbor you will find several lovely houses from the 1800s. Also at Horsens' harbor is the Workers and Industrial Craftsmen Museum. The museum is housed in an old electricity power station. Here you will enjoy watching machines at work as well as gain insight into 19th century living.
Plan a visit to Horsens on the last weekend of August. Annually, the community of Horsens hosts the European Medieval Festival. Horsens' hub becomes abuzz as it is turned into a giant medieval market. People of all ages will be enthralled by the abundance of entertainment including theater, music, jousting contests, falconry, jesters and medieval weddings. This lively event is not one to be missed!
