Food is very important in Belgium.
The young people tend to become more 'americanized' an eat hamburgers, pizza's and frozen food. The older generation (like myself, I'm 43) grew up eaten normally cooked and prepared food (deepfreezers became popular only in the 70's. Some typical belgian meals are : 1. The TYPICAL belgian fastfood is a pack of fries with a nice blob of mayonnaise on it. Belgians cannot imagine fries without mayonnaise. Putting ketchup on fries is considered an American herecy. 2. Mussels with fries and a beer, or beefsteak with fries. 3. A normal homecooked meal consists of potatoes (boiled, sometimes baked, sometimes mashed) with vegetables (carrots, sprouts, spinach, leek, cauliflower,etc..)and a piece of meat (saussage, cotelet, beefsteak, chicken, fish, etc..). 4. We eat horse meat (fried horsesteak, or smoked horsemeat) but only at home. You will find this only in restaurants that specialize in horsemeat. 5. The traditional Belgian cuisine often uses the lesser expensive parts of the animal : kidneys, liver, lungs, brains, etc.. 6. Fish, when served at dinner, has to look like fish (sometimes with the head still on, including the bones) and not like an industrially processed 'something' that has nothing to do anymore with fish. If anybody is interested, I'll write some more later. |

I am curious as to why Belgians eat horsemeat. Is it particularly tasteful or is there another reason? |

With all the respect to the Morrocan community of Belgium, couscous is definetly not a traditional dish of Belgium. I grew up for 20 years in Waterloo and never tasted it until I came to the US. Don't get me wrong, couscous is delicious but definetly not a dish you will find in a book of belgian home cooking
