Well, I need a 12-step program for gardenholics.

I am not kidding, LRH! I spend hundreds of dollars every spring and hundreds more in the summer.

If you have never planted an herb garden before, and you need some advice, come see me. I plant one every year and have been doing so for aeons. I have learned what to plant and what not to plant.

Last year, the neighborhood decided to put the best gardens on a walking tour. They added mine to the list and asked me what to call it. Someone named hers "Seaside in the Canyon." I didn't have a name, I just told the chairman of the committee that "it's [gardening, that is] cheaper than therapy."

So, they named my garden "Cheap Therapy." And I must, above all things, get my hands dirty! I love grubbing in the dirt. I love pulling weeds. And I can't wait until SPRING!!!

Thanks for this thread, LRH. It shall give me some comfort during the winter months. Maybe you and I can come back here and compare notes on what we are going to plant next year -- Good Lord Willin'.

I love my little garden, a few veg, but mainly herbs, on a more hit and miss basis then our little blue footed devil here

I recall reading recently that a centre in London that deals with the rehabilitation of torture victims has used gardening as a form of therapy and with remarkable results. It seems this started rather by accident, but when the psychologists dealing the the gardners concerned observed that these people were repsonding far better than the others, decided to make it a standard part of therapy. I wish I could remember where I read it (if I can I shall post it here) as it was both a sad and hopeful story.

I love gardening too, I'm not an expert though, I just plant whatever I feel like planting, which doesn't allways turn out right since it's not a very sunny garden and the soil is quite moist.
My favourite is my Jasmine Tree, lavender, my roses and all the different bulbs( tulips, daffodils, snowdrops, crocus and many more) that surprise me every year.
Oh and I also love forget-me-not, I have zillions of them in my garden.......I wish it was summer, so I could my home grown strawberries( one a week, but it's not about quantity)!!!!!

Seems like what every you love, Cat....

....I'm allergic to. Night-blooming Jasmine gives me athsma. I literally CANNOT breathe around that stuff. Had a boyfriend who lived in the Hollywood Hills (up in a canyon -- lots and lots of canyons in California). I got wheezy every time I was there at night. Very sexy -- wheezing. I could just hear Kent thinking, "my girlfriend has Emphysema."

Anyway, I love bulbs. And I love sweetpeas (which I canot grow -- not enough sun) and peonies.

Over three months until Spring -- phooey!

I love gardening as well. I remember spending hours and hours with my grandfather working his fields when I was young. I live in the city now in an apartment.. so I don't have room to do much. Over the summers, though, I cover every inch of my porch with plants, though. I had cayenne pepper, eggplants, periwinkles, mint, basil, and dill this summer.

I hope to be able to buy a house in the country in a year or so ....it has to have a few requirements. It must have a fireplace and there must be a place for me to garden....

Alas it is more than three months to spring where I live.

My garden is small and mostly flowers - phlox, delphiniums, bulbs, daylilies, only one rose now

Just got the new Stokes catalogue and am drooling over the pictures lol.

Perhaps we can teach you how to treat your plants properly. It is not that hard.

You just have to learn the signs of water needs but most people actually kill their plants with too much water lol.

Many plants change colour slightly when they need water. They lose the brightness of their greens and go a little grey. If they have too much water they will turn yellowish first and then rot off their roots. Then it is bye bye plant.

Set aside a specific time of the week to check all the plants to help you remember.

"Stokes catalog?" You mean there's a gardening catalog on whose list my name and address is not set forth? How could this be?

I love sweetpeas too, that smell...mmmm. I did grow them once, no twice, and they did wonderfully, even though there's not enough sun in my garden. You are the sun, Niquie, so just give it a try!

I've tried, Cat!

I came home one spring day to find that my mother and father had planted sweetpeas for me -- did the trellis and everything. That's was darned nice of them too. They bloomed for a bit, but the exposure just isn't right.

I did the same for a neighbor, and hers didn't last much longer than mine.
