POLITICAL SENTENCE PRONOUNCED AGAINST SWEDISH ARTIST NIXON NÚÑEZ

On April 8 the Supreme Administrative Court of Stockholm pronounced a political sentence against the Swedish artist Nixon Núñez. The sentence was communicated by means of a notification to Mr. Núñez´ lawyers in Stockholm on April 9. The notification, signed by the reporter of the court Eva Hedlund, was concise and laconic: "Denied". Only the last names of the judges involved were given - Nordborg, Wennerström and Nord - thus underscoring the anonymity surrounding this type of trials.

The pronouncement of the Supreme Adminstrative Court of Stockholm rejects Mr. Núñez´ right of appeal in the case at hand, thereby automatically confirming the sentence previously dictated by the reporter of the Administrative Court of Appeal of Stockholm, Leif Gaeverth.

The request for an oral hearing of the case was denied and the trial took place in camera. The presence of the Swedish and Spanish lawyers of Mr. Núñez at the trial was rejected, as was Mr. Núñez´ request that his Spanish lawyers be admitted at the trial as observers. The appearance of Mr. Núñez´ Spanish physician as a witness was also denied. The seven medical certificates presented by Mr. Núñez were rejected, as were the three certificates issued by Spanish authorities in favor of Mr. Núñez. All these documents were taken to the record as irrelevant.

The Swedish judicial power is the object of control on the part of the Government and, although it is true that the judicial offices are formally held for life it is equally true that a judge can be dismissed from his position if the Political Commission of the Government considers it necessary.

In secrecy and behind closed doors a political sentence was passed against Nixon Núñez.
