Discover the unique Nice in France
Between Marseilles and Genoa along the Mediterranean coast, you will find the beautiful city of Nice. The city is considered to be a leading resort on the French Riviera. When it comes to traveling, it is often said that Nice itself is the attraction. The beautiful multi-colored waters of the Mediterranean, top quality dining, varied shopping and art-deco facades all contribute to this well-deserved reputation. Besides all this, there are some amazing sites worth seeing that make a trip to Nice even more memorable.
Nice has had a long history. It was founded in the 5th century BC by the Greeks of Marseille. It quickly became a very busy trading station and even though it had rivals and suffered attacks, it eventually emerged as the beautiful coastal town we know so well today.
Because of its history, Nice has a very distinct culture. The local language is generally considered to be Niçard which is still spoken by a minority in the area. The main influences are Italian, Corsican and Provençal. This is reflected in the foods, language and culture. More recently immigrants from different parts of the world have added to the culture.
If you are fortunate enough to visit Nice, you might like to visit Vieux Nice (Old Nice) where you'll get a taste for times gone by as well as spice up life with newer shops, bars and nightclubs. Or you might try the Cours Saleya Flower Market which is regarded as one of the best attractions in the city. The Promenade des Anglais is a busy part of the French Riviera that is in many ways considered to be the best part of it. You can also visit the Matisse Museum and Theatre de la Photographie et de l'Image for a bit of artistic history. If old buildings and history appeal to you, you might try the Russian Cathedral, the Nice Archaeology Museum and the Roman Ruins as well as Le Chateau - old castle ruins set against a breathtaking backdrop. There is really so much to see and do that it cannot simply be explained away. You simply have to experience Nice for yourself to find out what all the buzz is about.
