Travel to Strasbourg in France


The capital of Europe, Strasbourg is home to the European Court of Human Rights and the Council of Europe. It is also the meeting place of the European Parliament of the European Union. The headquarters for the Eurocorps is also located in Strasbourg.

The most well-known attraction in the city of Strasbourg is the Cathédrale de Nôtre Dame constructed of sandstone. This amazing gothic building is built on the site of a roman temple and reaches a height of 142 m. The construction of the Cathedral began in 1015, however a fire destroyed most of it. Work on the Cathedral began in 1190 again at which stage the Gothic style had arrived alone with stonemasons and master builders from Chartres. Building was completed in 1439.

Grande Île, the historic city centre of Strasbourg, was declared a World Heritage Site in 1988. Many medieval churches are to be found around Strasbourg, aside from the Cathedral. These magnificent churches are truly something to marvel at. The French Baroque and Classicism style of building is clearly and spectacularly seen in the Palais Rohan.

Throughout Strasbourg beautiful parks can be discovered, some of great historical significance. The Parc de l'Organgerie features a small neo-classical castle, French gardens and a little zoo. Parc des Contades is the oldest park in the city. Popular amongst tourists are the lovely bridges. The Ponts couverts has four towers and is the most impressive.

Petite France, found in the Grande Île, is very popular for its many hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops. This stunning section of the town lies where the Île River divides into canals.
