Explore the wonders of Dresden
The stunning buildings of Dresden's Altstadt look ancient, but most are newly reconstructed; the Allied bombings of February 1845 that claimed over 40 000 lives destroyed 75% of the city center. Its Baroque architecture, world-class museums, and Neustadt nightlife make Dresden one of the most celebrated cities of its size. Backpackers and tourists traveling from Berlin to Prague often stop over to relax in one of the hotels in Dresden.
Dresden is bisected by the Elbe river 60km northwest of the Czech border. The Hauptbahnhof is on the same side as the Altstadt, south of the river. Many of Dresden's main attractions are between Altmarkt and the Elbe. Nightlife is to the north in the Neustadt, around Albertplatz.
The Neustadt is home to a number of hostels that give revelers proximity to clubs and bars and have late check-out times. Quieter hostels and pricier hotels can be found around the Altstadt, closer to the sights. Note that reservations are a must anywhere.
Dresden is also an important center of the sciences and is home to many researchers. The city is often called the "Silicon Valley of Germany" because numerous computer hardware and hi-tech development firms have opened offices and research facilities in the region. The Dresden University of Technology, is one of the world's oldest technical universities.
Because of its location in a relatively narrow river valley, Dresden's climate is much more characteristic of southern Germany and is considerably warmer than most other places in eastern Germany. In 2002 Dresden was listed as one of Europe's greenest (large) cities: a third of its area is covered by the forested areas called Dresdner Heide. The Grober Garten (big garden) is the largest urban park in the city.
You will find a large choice of shops and department stores in the Prager Strasse, Altmarkt and Wilsdruffer Strasse in Old Town. Don't miss the 692m long Konigsstrabe, now fully restored with many exclusive shops, restaurants and cafés.
Dresden is a place that caters for the entertainment and relaxation for young and old.
