When to go

The ideal time to visit Holland is between mid-May and early October, when day temperatures are generally 20 - 30°C, with nights around 10 - 20°C. It can be quite rainy, so bring an umbrella. Holland's tulip season runs from April to mid-May.


Holland has typical European weather conditions, it has a temperate, marine climate with cool summers and mild winters. The coastal regions of Holland have the mildest climate throughout the year and the lowest rainfall. In summer months the slightly higher temperatures are more likely to produce thunderstorms accompanied by heavy showers. The weather in Holland can be very changeable from day to day at all times of the year, and the character of each season may vary from one year to another. Holland generally has very cold winters, which may cause rivers and canals to freeze over. Gales in Holland are frequent along the coast especially in autumn and winter.

Visas and Passports

Health and Safety

Your health shouldn't be at risk while visiting Holland, although you should drink bottled water if you are not quite used to other countries' water and you should keep your body hydrated at all times, especially if you are planning to see the country by foot. Holland has a fairly high crime rate, but violence is not very common. Generally it is pickpockets and petty thefts you should be vigilant of. If you are planning to rent a bike while on your trip, you should definitely hire a chain and lock with it, because bicycle thefts are very common in Holland.

Money and Currency

The Euro is the official unit of currency in Holland. Tips for services rendered are not necessary but they are appreciated. Taxi drivers are generally tipped 10% of the taxi fare. Holland has an abundance of ATM machines, that accepts all major credit card types such as, MasterCard, Diners Club, Visa, American Express, etc. Most big establishments like restaurants and hotels will accept credit cards, whereas smaller shops will insist on cash.
