Discover the beautifully situated Lillafured
Situated in the Bükk Mountains, the small town of Lillafüred is a popular tourist resort. While the town may officially be part of Miskolc, it is located some 12 km away from the city and most locals refer to the two as complete separate places. This beautiful holiday resort town is surrounded by picturesque mountains and is located on Lake Hámori. It was established by Count András Bethlen who, on visiting the location, decided to build a holiday resort here. He named the resort for his wife, Lilla Vay. Today it is a very popular tourist destination with a large number of attractions.
So besides enjoying the tranquil atmosphere, what could you expect to do in this picturesque town? Well, if you're looking for a hotel in Lillafüred, you might start with a visit to the Palace Hotel. This beautiful renaissance building was built between 1927 and 1930 and features beautiful stained glass. Around the hotel you will find a large park filled with well-cared for rare plants. Even if you cant stay here, it is well worth visiting - and the Renaissance restaurant is a treat! On your way out, you should stop at the hanging gardens which are located below the hotel. The garden is the location of the longest waterfall in Hungary and is also the spot where you will find the Anna Cave. In fact, Lillafüred has three caves worth visiting. The Anna Cave features plant fossils which have been preserved in limestone while the István Cave is a dripstone cave. The Szeleta Cave has been the sight of many a paleolithic discovery and visitors may still find themselves trying to glimpse some ancient relic as they tour it.
In the summer months, the artificial Lake Hámori is a great place to hire a boat for a lazy afternoon paddle. Not far is Ottó Herman's House which is a small museum dedicated to the man of the same name. Miller's Rock, with it's distinct crucifix fixed firmly on the top, is the focus of many local legends while Fehérkőlápa features a pretty marsh and is part of the Bükk National Park. If you enjoy the taste of trout, a visit to the Trout farm is a must. For the more adventurous, Hámor Rock is popular with rock climbers and presents quite a nice challenge. As you can see, Lillafüred has many fine attractions. Make this lovely little town a part of your next trip to Hungary.
