The giant, boot-shaped landmass known as Italy has been enchanting and enthralling visitors for millennia. Its beauty, grace and stateliness have a way of making you want to stay here forever. Rich in history, this beautiful country has many attractions and cities worthy of a visit.
Though habitation of the area probably began around 2000 BC, Italy is best known for its days as under Roman rule. For centuries various leaders battled to get their hands on whatever sections of this beautiful country they could. From the 13th to the 16th centuries Italy was considered the cultural center of the western world. In the early 1800's, Napoleon stirred up feelings of nationality in his fellow countrymen and managed to unify them for about ten years before Austria became the dominant power of Italy once more. Italy was eventually unified as a singular nation under a monarchist government in the late 1800's. In the early 1920's Benito Mussolini established a fascist dictatorship and allied with Nazi Germany resulting in the defeat of Italy. Italy eventually came under republic rule in 1946 which led to an economic revival. Today Italy is a member of NATO and the EEC.
Most people, however, know Italyfor its numerous attractions, famous people and romantic landscapes. The Colosseum of Rome, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Greek temple of Neptune of Paestum are some historical treats. The canals of Venice are synonymous with star-struck lovers and gondoliers just as the Alps are renowned for skiing. Pizza, pasta, fine wine, Ferraris and elegant taste have also earned Italy some fame. As for art, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Botticelli and Michelangelo have not only made their mark on their home country but also influenced art world wide. Dante, Petrarch and Ariosto are renowned for their poetry while Vivaldi, Corelli, Gioacchino Rossini and Giuseppe Verdi are held in esteem for their musical masterpieces.
And it's no wonder - for Italy inspires creativity and motivates the heart to feel. It is truly a place of beauty and wonder - a geographical and cultural masterpiece.
