Bari
Italy's Bari is a city with a richly diverse history. Bari's culture has been formed out of Byzantine, Swabian, Arabic, Angevin and Pisan influences, all of which is clearly seen in the magnificent architecture of the city.
Bari, the city of Santa Klaus is particularly well known for the Basilica di Nicola. The Basilica was established in 1087. Relics of Saint Nicholas are kept beneath an altar in the crypt. These artifacts came from Myra. Even the bones of Saint Nicholas lie here. Three other Palatine churches are located in Bari, namely Acquaviva, Altamura and Monte Sant'Angelo sul Gargano.
Bari is divided into four areas. Firstly there is the old town situated on the peninsula. Here you will discover the famed Basilica as well as the Cathedral of San Sabino and Swabian Castle. This is the place to go if you want to enjoy Bari's nightlife. The Murattiano town has a gorgeous esplanade on the sea and is where everyone goes to shop. The surrounding modern city developed mostly in the 1960s/70s. Finally, there are the suburbs which sprawled out in the 1990s.
The boulevard Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is where you will come across the Piccinni Theatre as well as the Piazza Prefettura. Admire the lovely façade of the Fizzarotti palace. Castello Svevo, is the huge Swabian castle. It was commissioned by Frederic II. Queen Isabella of Aragona and Queen Bona Sforza held court in the castle.
Pay a fascinating visit to the Trulli of Alberobello. These are limestone houses of mortarless construction are truly interesting to see. Roofs are either domed, conical or pyramidal in shape and built of corbelled limestone slabs.
Why not plan your flight to Bari to be here for the festival to celebrate Saint Nicholas. The parade is held on May 8th. Before the festival a pilgrimage, the Processione dei Pellegrini, is made to the sea. Loud music by brass bands can be heard all of Easter week. In September, tourists can join in the celebrations of Fiera del Levante. This celebrates trade links with the Near East.
