Turin has its beginning in about 28 BC when the Romans established a military camp called Castra Taurinorum and dedicated it to Augustus. The Roman street grid is still seen in the design of the modern city. Throughout history Turin experienced many changes. At the end of World War 2, the city was rebuilt and industry developed quickly. Large numbers of people immigrated to Turin.

Turin is most famous for the Shroud of Turin. What exactly is the Shroud of Turin? It is an ancient linen cloth with the image of a crucified man imprinted on it. Millions believe this man to be Jesus of Nazareth. Thousands of hours have been spent by researches in the study of this Shroud. Notably, it is the most studied relic in human history. Much debate has raged over whether the Shroud of Turin is real or whether it is a forgery, some kind of hoax. The Shroud of Turin can be viewed at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

A popular attraction in the city of Turin is the Mole Antonelliana, a former synagogue where the National Cinema Museum of Italy is now housed. A collection of intriguing Egyptian artifacts is kept at the Museo Egizio.
