During the 1900s such activities were relocated in the north; however Dunedin became recognized for its superior tertiary education and extensive research.

Dunedin's affluent past is clearly seen in the Victorian and Edwardian architecture of buildings such as the Municipal Chambers, St. Paul's Cathedral and St. Joseph's Cathedral. Dunedin Railway Station stands out from the rest. Constructed in 1906, the building has a Flemish Renaissance feel. Along the Peninsula you will discover Larnach Castle. Taking 12 years from 1871 to be built Larnach Castle features outstanding views of Dunedin and the ocean. Many lovely gardens are dotted around Dunedin. The Botanic Garden is best known for the Rhododendron Dell, the star of the annual October Rhododendron Festival. Glenfalloch Woodland Garden and Restaurant beside the harbor is some 30 acres in size, a remarkable garden to see. Dunedin has a number of museums and galleries for the culturally inclined. Otago Museum and Discovery World features Maori artifacts and an interactive science centre. Other places to go are Otago Settlers Museum, Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Speights Brewery Heritage Tours and Dunedin's Public Libraries.

Dunedin offers great opportunities to discover some of natures most elegant and magnificent creatures. Join a cruise of the Otago Harbor where you can observe dolphins, fur seals, penguins, albatross and other birds as well as the areas fascinating geological characteristics.
