Travel to Hamilton in New Zealand

Enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of Hamilton

Hamilton, located on New Zealand's North Island in the region of Waikato, lies on either side of the Waikato River. Hamilton is best known for the stunning Hamilton Gardens and also for its vibrant atmosphere.

The area where Hamilton stands today was first inhabited by Maori villages. Many of the villages were no longer occupied when the English settlers arrived here. The settlement was named in honor of Captain Fane Charles Hamilton, a fearless commander who died during the battle of Gate Pa in Tauranga. Hamilton is located in New Zealand's most fertile region and for many years served as an agricultural hub.

Hamilton's greatest attraction is the Hamilton Gardens. This cluster of public gardens is cared for by the Hamilton City Council. More than 2000 events are held here annually, the Hamilton Gardens Summer Festival and Pacific Rose Bowl Festival being just two of them. The theme of this attraction is "the story of gardens". With this in mind the gardens have been placed in collections called: Paradise, Landscape, Cultivar, Productive and Fantasy. At the heart of Hamilton Gardens you will find the Information Centre and a restaurant and café. Other attractions in Hamilton are the Sky Riverside casino, Hamilton Zoo, Art Post art Gallery and Waikato Museum of Art and Culture. At this museum you can observe Te Winika an impressive Maori war canoe or waka. Hamilton is only 20 minutes away from Ngaruawahia. Here you will come across Turangawaewae Marae and the residence of the Maori Queen.

As already mentioned Hamilton is a vibrant city, filled with good times and fun experiences. Within the city there is a great selection of cafés, bars and restaurants. Hamilton's restaurants offer a wide variety of sumptuous meals and cuisine from around the world. The nightlife in Hamilton will have you up until the early hours of the morning. Hamilton hosts a number of exciting events throughout the year including the Balloons over Waikato (hot air balloon festival), National Agricultural Fielddays and more.

Hamilton is a great holiday destination where you can spend your day quietly ambling around beautiful gardens or engaging in fun-filled activities and then spend your evening at one of the cosmopolitan bars or nightclubs.
