Originally inhabited by the Maori, the region was charted in 1769 by Lieutenant James Cook. From that time on the bay was used by sailing ships as a place to make repairs and trade with the Maori for food and water. Whaling ships began stopping at the town of Russell and deserters and fugitives resided here. Paihia however was a missionary settlement. Interestingly, the earliest Maori Bible was printed in Paihia. A treaty between the Maori and the British was signed in 1840 and the land came under the jurisdiction of Queen Victoria as long as the Maori could keep their lands, forests and fisheries.
Numerous sites of historical significance are found in and around Paihia beach resort. It was at the Witangi Treaty Grounds that the previously mentioned treaty was signed. Guided tours are offered here as well as cultural displays. Amble through the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and enjoy the excellent views, local bird life and fine gardens. Apart from discovering Paihia's intriguing past, there are many activities to be enjoyed at the Bay of Islands. Adventurous vacationers may enjoy parasailing, high speed boat tours, tandem skydiving, horse riding or quad biking. Head off on one of the many walking trails such as Opua Coastal Walk, Russell Coastal Track, Kauri Walk and Waitangi-Haruru Falls.
