Town of the Northern lights, Norway's Alta is located alongside the striking Altafjord. Natural beauty is seen in the vast woodlands and the sections of Finnmarksvidda's High Plateau which it encompasses. One of Europe's major canyons has been formed in the region by the river Altaelva.

Various rock carvings have been found in Alta and date back from 4200 BC to 500BC. UNESCO has declared these carvings as a World Heritage Site. The Alta Museum is sited near the rock carvings and was presented in 1993 with the "European Museum of the Year Award". Built in 1899 the Northern Lights Observatory (Haldde at Mount Sukkertoppen) is the oldest permanent aurora borealis observatory in the world.
Make a visit to the Northern Light Igloo, a hotel made of Ice and the northernmost ice hotel in Europe. A night at this hotel in Alta will be surprisingly comfortable as you snuggle in your warm sleeping bag encircled by snow and ice. Why not plan your vacation to Alta during March when the Borealis Winter Festival is in full swing. At the festival you will encounter the exciting dog sled race, the most impressive in Northern Europe. The traditional Bossekop Market is also popular amongst visitors. Another entertaining event is the Finnmark College's Students Event Week. This week is filled with concerts, cultural activities, outdoor fun and awesome parties. Students create fantastical innovations using snow, ice, light and sound.
