Iquitos is a unique city, situated in the magnificent rainforest of Peru. Picturesquely surrounded by the Amazon, Nanay and Itaya rivers, Iquitos has been an important port for the Amazon Basin. Iquitos is also the largest city in the world that is inaccessible by road and can only be reached by boat or airplane.

Iquitos began as a Jesuit mission, set up during the 1750s. When the Loreto Region was established in 1864, Iquitos began to flourish as the area's capital. Iquitos' most affluent era was during the rubber boom from 1880 to 1912. During this time many European and Chinese immigrants came to Iquitas and their cultural influence has combined with that of the indigenous tribes to form a truly colorful society. Impressive mansions and the Iron House of Gustave Eiffel stand as proof of the opulent rubber industry.

Iquitos is beginning to feature more as a tourist destination and a good point to begin tours of the Amazon Jungle as well as the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve. Many tourists also take trips from Iquitos downriver to Brazil's Manaus out to the Atlantic Ocean.

La Plaza de Armas, the heart of Iquitos' urban life, is host to numerous cultural and religious celebrations. The vibrant, warm atmosphere along with the restaurants, street theatre and dance halls make for a lively evening, continuing on until the early morning hours. As you stroll along the Riverwalk Boulevard you can purchase local crafts for you family and friends. Amongst the craft works you will find stunning bracelets and necklaces, blowguns, carvings and pottery.

Belénis is a section of Iquitos that can be reached only by boat in the wet season and by foot during the dry season. Here you will find an open-air market. Along medicine lane you will find a variety of traditional plant medicines.
