Situated near the Urubamba River, the small town of Urubamba is a popular tourist destination. The town itself is nothing spectacular. While it may enjoy a fair amount of accommodation facilities and a well developed tourist infrastructure, it is otherwise fairly average. The real attraction to Urubamba, is its location in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Urubamba is the biggest town in the Valley and as such, it is the most traveled to town in the region.

Urubamba, Peru, is the best place to rest your head if you are visiting the many beautiful ruins that dot the Sacred Valley. As the town is only one hour from Cuzco, it also sees a lot of travelers who are on their way to enjoy the magnificent ruins of Machu Picchu. These visitors often stop over for a day or two at Urubamba to wet their appetites for the the ancient masterpiece. Besides being near to a large number of Incan ruins, several of the ruins bear a certain amount of significance and help historians and admirers to better understand the many mysteries of the past. As the largest town in the Sacred Valley, Urubamba is also the home of Kusiwasi (house of joy), a theater company which uses dance and theater to revive the traditions and culture of the Andean people. If you can catch a performance by the company it will greatly enhance your experience.

The town of Urubamba has been so strongly linked to the Sacred Valley that the two are sometimes used interchangeably. Visitors may starts at the eastern end of the Valley where they can enjoy shopping at the Sunday market at Pisac and exploring the surrounding ruins. In the middle of the valley the village of Yucay and the town of Urubamba both have superb accommodation. You can enjoy three star hotel accommodation in Urubamba - perhaps even five star accommodation. For visitors on a budget, there are plenty of cheap hostels in Urubamba. Ollantaytambo is another village at the end of the valley and it also features impressive ruins. It is best to spend at least two full days in this beautiful valley.
