Discover the fascinating Bukit Panjang
Bukit Panjang is a great shopping city providing easy access to the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. Bukit Panang, meaning "long hill", lies near a range of low hills.
A reform took place at one stage where Singapore names were to be changed into Mandarin. At this stage the city was called Zhenghua. This however was not taken well by the populous and the name was changed back to Bukit Panjang. The area was mainly made up of rural settlements but is now a suburban city with numerous industries such as granite quarries.
Bukit Panjang New Town is a new development in the north-west of Singapore. The majority of the town is sited upon a low, elongated hill near the Central Catchment Nature Reserve.
Bukit Panjang has a fantastic transportation system featuring the SMRT Light Rail. This Light Rapid Rapid Transit system was opened in 1999 and is completely automated. One of the SMRT Light Rail stations stops at the famous Bukit Panjang Plaza. This extensive shopping mall is filled to the brim with shops, restaurants and eateries. The Bukit Panjang Plaza is the main entertainment area. A library is also located at the plaza. Aside from the plaza there are three other shopping centers in Bukit Panjang. Bukit Panjang's shopping centers contain basic shops and outdoor eateries. The shopping centers are: Bangkit Shopping Center, Fajar Shopping, Greenridge Shopping Center.
Enjoy the sun outdoors at the Bukit Panjang Park. The lovely park surrounds a pretty pond. Zhenghua Park has playgrounds, a fitness area and a few gazebos. The parks are linked by a "park connector". This is a 2.5km cycling/jogging track that runs beside the Bukit Timah Expressway.
Bukit Panjang is a great stop on your travels around Singapore.
