Discover the beautiful rainforest of Bukit Timah
Bukit Timah Nature Reserve located just 12km from the city-state of Singapore is beautifully located on the slopes of the Bukit Timah Hill. Singapore is one of the only two cities in the world which encompasses a major rainforest. The rainforest is home to a great abundance and diversity of flora and fauna with some 840 flowering plant species and 500 animal species. In fact, there are more tree species in the relatively small Bukit Timah Nature Reserve than in all of North America.
Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is one of the first to be founded in Singapore dating back to 1883. Greater protection was put in place by the Nature Reserves Ordinance in 1951. The reserve gained its name from the highest mountain in the area which also happens to be Singapore's highest geographical location. The Malay word Bukit translates to "hill" and Timah to "tin". Originally the hill was used for granite quarrying but such operations were replaced by recreational areas such as Hindhede Nature Park with fun play equipment.
Some of the most popular activities in Singapore's Bukit Timah Nature Reserve are walking, running, hiking up Bukit Timah Hill and mountain biking on specially demarcated trails. Rock-climbing and abseiling are also on offer. Oftentimes athletes can be seen training in the area. As you make your way through the forest, look for colorful butterflies, exotic birds, flying lemurs, cute squirrels and lively monkeys. Expect to see plants such as pitcher plants, figs and macaranga.
Singapore's Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is open from 8:30 to 18:30 each day and admission is free. You can arrive at the reserve by means of the MRT or SMRT Bus.
Nearby is Park Chinchilla. This is a Pet Rodent Breeding facility with cuddly chinchillas, cute dwarf rabbits, fluffy hamsters, playful rats and other adorable critters. Also nearby is Singapore's Bukit Timah plaza with an abundance of shops and eateries. Singapore's Bukit Timah plaza is a vibrant shopping mall filled with entertainment opportunities.
