Singapore is located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula and consists of one main island and more than 60 small islands. As the smallest nation in Southeast Asia, Singapore only covers an area of 710.2 square kilometers, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in prosperity and infrastructure, being the 5th wealthiest country in the world, measured in terms of GDP per capita.

Prior to being established as a trading post for the British East India Company in 1819, Singapore was a peaceful Malay fishing community. Having been under British rule for many decades, Singapore eventually gained full independence in August 1965. Today Singapore is a popular tourist destination, with more than 10 million tourists visiting in 2007 and the number continues to climb. Singapore is a kaleidoscope of cultures, with many interesting attractions. Take a look at the map featured here, and then make your plans to visit this fascinating country.
