Travel to Gothenburg in Sweden

Explore the exciting city of Gothenburg, Sweden

Situated on the western coast of Sweden, Gothenburg is a place of beauty and history. It is the second largest city in Sweden and part of the historical province of Västergötland. Gothenburg, spelt "Göteborg" in Swedish, is the prettiest city in Sweden. The city is also home to Scandinavia's largest port and has Dutch-designed canal system.

Gothenburg was founded by King Gustav II Adolf early in the 17th century. At the time the Swedes only had control of one point on the western coastline and they were charged high tolls by the Danes for using the sound between Sweden and Denmark. There was a period of war between the two countries because of this which resulted in the eastern provinces of Denmark being ceded to Sweden, and not long afterwards Gothenburg was established. King Gustav was an admirer of Dutch merchants and he invited them to live and trade in the relatively new city. It was the influence of these traders that resulted in the canals and certain Dutch-styled sections of the city. The Scots and Germans also played a role in shaping Gothenburg.

Present-day Gothenburg is a well established city. Its transportation services are numerable and include air, road, rail and sea forms of transport. Trade and shipping have always played an important part in the city's development and examples of modern industry are SKF, Volvo and Ericsson. Gothenburg is also culturally mature with a wide range of sites and productions worth seeing.

There is a lot to see in Gothenburg. The new opera house, reminiscent of a ship's sails, has performances daily from six in the evening till late. The area around the central canal is quite old and has a lot of historical buildings worth seeing. There are many museums which cover a variety of subjects such as art, design, crafts, sea history, natural history and science. The Museum of World Culture is also very interesting. The Göteborg Botanical Garden is generally considered to be one of the most outstanding botanical gardens on the continent. You might also consider a visit to the Liseberg amusement park which is one of the country's most popular attractions.

Besides natural beauty, creative building styles and an interesting history, Gothenburg is also alive with creativity. Quite a few world famous music groups and styles have sprung forth from this city, as well as sports stars and singers. Come to Gothenburg and experience the magic for yourself.
