Gothenburg, spelt "Göteborg" in Swedish, is the prettiest city in Sweden. The city is also home to Scandinavia's largest port and has Dutch-designed canal system.
Gothenburg was founded by King Gustav II Adolf early in the 17th century. At the time the Swedes only had control of one point on the western coastline and they were charged high tolls by the Danes for using the sound between Sweden and Denmark. There was a period of war between the two countries because of this which resulted in the eastern provinces of Denmark being ceded to Sweden, and not long afterwards Gothenburg was established. King Gustav was an admirer of Dutch merchants and he invited them to live and trade in the relatively new city. It was the influence of these traders that resulted in the canals and certain Dutch-styled sections of the city. The Scots and Germans also played a role in shaping Gothenburg.
