Discover the friendly atmosphere of Changhua
Changhua, the "grain store of Taiwan" is beautifully bordered by mountains and the Taiwan Straits. With a mild climate, stunning scenery, fascinating history and fun-filled activities, Changhua is a first-class tourist destination.
Changhua's past began some 280 years ago. With its excellent water supply and agricultural potential many over the years have considered the area a good place to settle. Farmlands were established in Changhua and from then it developed into a trading post. In 1723 Zhuluo County government was based in Changhua turning it into an important agricultural centre. In later years Changhua's port became silted up and was therefore no longer in use. The capital was moved to Taichung.
Changhua's major attraction is a Buddha statue standing 22m high and guarded by two massive lions. The Buddha stands before the Big Buddha hall behind which are two tall pagodas. Another grand historical relic is Confucius Temple dating back to 1726, one of the oldest of its kind in Taiwan. Elegant carvings decorate the main hall while the ancestral shrine of Confucius is truly impressive. Upon two plaques, gifts from Emporer Chienlung, dictums praising Confucianism have been engraved. The impressive Yu-san Hall, constructed in 1889, was once the residence of the Chen clan. Within the hall you can view original carvings and paintings as well as an ancestral shrine. Nearby is the Hungmao Well built by the Dutch some 300 years ago.
Those seeking an authentic cultural experience can make their way to the Taiwan Folk Village. Traditional architecture has been rebuilt and there are about 16 rare crafts which can be observed daily in the village. The Folk Village is the ideal place to gain insight into the traditional arts, customs and cultural relics.
Changhua has an abundance of natural beauty to admire. Nature lovers will enjoy a visit to Tianjhung Forest Recreation Park.
